The Moxy Hotel lighting feature was a collaboration between Moment Factory, Digital Ambiance and Tesseract. Moment Factory came up with the original concept for a multi story set of suspended metal rings, each filled with an addressable LED grid. They then turned to Digital Ambiance who partnered with Tesseract to bring the concept into reality.
This piece can be described as a volumetric lighting installation, using pixels suspended within a stainless steel ring to create a “holographic” area in which to run animated lighting patterns.
From a mechanical perspective, having 15 thin steel rings, some up to 13 feet in diameter, hanging over people’s heads in a partially outdoor, coastal, earthquake prone environment posed numerous design challenges. Subtle changes were made to the original concept to produce a structurally sound design that still met the client’s initial vision and budget.
Tesseract was responsible for the mechanical design, structural review (in association with Clark & Reder Engineering), fabrication of all metal components and onsite installation of the completed chandelier.
We are proud to work with talented groups like Digital Ambiance and Moment Factory to produce such complex, multi-media art pieces for the public to enjoy.
